Quick Facts
Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. Today, with more than 81 million Americans suffering from heart disease, it is responsible for more deaths than all forms of cancer combined. Heart disease also is the most common cause of hospitalization in people older than 65.
However, thanks to ongoing research efforts, breakthrough advances in medications and interventional therapies, Americans with heart disease are living longer and healthier lives.
According to a Nov. 23, 2009 Wall Street Journal article, the death rate from coronary heart disease dropped 34% from 1995 to 2005 and deaths from cardiovascular disease dropped 26% over the same period.
