Free ‘Discovery to Recovery’ Event Educates on Spectrum of the Disease

UC Breast Cancer Researchers

To educate on the latest breast cancer research as well as the spectrum of the illness, including risks, genetic testing, personalized treatment and care after treatment, the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Center is hosting a free event for survivors, their families and the community.

The “We See the Promise of Discovery to Recovery” breast cancer conference, being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center, 151 Goodman Drive, is free and open to the public. The event will involve presentations from experts within the institute at UC, the community and beyond.

Featured speakers for the day include Craig Jordan, PhD, a professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, who is known as the “Father of Tamoxifen,” a groundbreaking therapeutic drug for breast cancer, and Jeffrey Rosen, PhD, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine, who studies mechanisms regulating breast tissue and hormonal activity in breast cancer.

Other talks will touch on integrative methods for healing and wellness throughout and after treatment, reconstruction options following breast cancer and reviving sexual intimacy following treatment.

There will also be a presentation about The Grace Project, a series of empowering portraits capturing women who have experienced mastectomy surgery as a result of breast cancer.

“We have a truly comprehensive agenda and an all-star lineup,” says Elyse Lower, MD, director of the Breast Cancer Center, professor in the Division of Hematology Oncology at the UC College of Medicine and a UC Health oncologist. “This annual event not only allows us to inform patients about the innovative research and treatments available at the UC Cancer Institute but also to rally together and show our support in fighting this disease. We’re excited to host this conference again this year to empower patients and members of the community and to showcase our strengths locally.”
