This has been quite the winter! As we experience more ice and snow and colder temperatures than we have in recent years, it’s easy to feel unmotivated to exercise. But when the thermometer drops, you can raise your spirits with these fun and simple ways to exercise.

  • Get a jump on it: Try some jumping jacks or jump rope for a quick and steady cardio boost.
  • There’s an app for that: A number of fitness apps are available for free and offer workout coaching and circuit exercises you can do at home. Check out Livestrong/myplate. I use this one myself and recommend it to all my patients who have a BMI of 25 or above. Of course adding in exercise accelerates the process. Other good apps include Fitocracy, Fitsby or GAIN. Additionally, food tracking apps like Lose It or Weight Watchers are available with your membership or for a small fee.
  • TV: it’s not just for couch potatoes: While I don’t advocate too much TV watching, there are some great exercise/fitness DVDs and fun video games that take you through a complete workout, help you track fitness goals and provide motivation.
  • Keep it clean: Scrubbing, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and more can help with some major calorie burn. You also have the added benefit of a sparking clean home! If it’s been a while since you vacuumed behind the sofa, get those muscles moving and get to it.

Whatever you decide, you’ve got to keep moving. Spring will be here before you know it and you’ll want to be in fabulous shape to stop and smell the roses.
