Medical Mondays: Facial Plastics Surgery

What are the most common procedures performed by a facial plastic surgeon?

We do a lot of cancer reconstruction. So, people that have various types of facial cancers. A lot of times these people end up losing some of their facial tissue. We spend a lot of our time to figure out the best way to restore both form and function. We borrow spare parts throughout the body to rebuild the facial features that have been lost.

Another big part of the practice is called “Facial Reanimation”. For folks that have lost the ability to move their face, whether its paralysis due to a tumor that they’ve had, maybe a stroke or sometimes they’re just born that way. Sometimes we’ll transplant muscle into the face in order to give folks the ability to move their face again which can be a pretty big deal for people. It’s a great, great part of the practice.
