Medical Mondays—James Whiteside, MD, on Laser Treatment Therapy

It’s Medical Mondays with UC Health. Today we’re talking with Dr. Whiteside, a laser treatment therapy surgeon at UC Health.

Q: Dr. Whiteside, what is laser treatment therapy?
A: Laser treatment therapy is an innovative approach to treating vaginal dryness without using hormones. It works by damaging the skin and the surrounding unaffected tissue, and that damage stimulates repair in a way that generates an overall more mature skin.

Q: Why are breast cancer survivors being recruited versus women with no history of breast cancer?
A: Breast cancer patients are often told not to use estrogen as it may stimulate a new breast cancer. If a laser therapy works in place of topical estrogen, then vaginal dryness and painful sex may be treated without increasing her risks of breast cancer.
