Meet Our W&S Open Team: Brian Grawe, MD

As co-director of player medical services for the Western & Southern Open, UC Health physician Brian Grawe, MD, knows what it takes to care for the elite athletes of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

Grawe, who is also an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, has been a team physician to the tournament since 2014.

Grawe said he transitioned into the role based on multiple factors, including UC Health’s sponsorship of the event and his previous training with the medical director of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He is also a team physician for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats.

For the Western & Southern Open, preparations include pre-tournament conference calls with the ATP and WTA and Western & Southern, and multiple walk-throughs of the physical space to discuss emergency action plans.
Once the tournament begins, the waiting begins.

While there is always the hope that a player doesn’t need medical attention, Grawe, who specializes in the care of the injured athlete, is prepared. The goal, he said, is to keep the elite players of the ATP and WTA safe and healthy throughout the tournament.
