If you’ve been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, it’s time to see a specialist

Since September is Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month, I felt like this was the perfect time to share some important information that could possibly help save your life or the life of a loved one. According to an article published in the New York Times, most women with ovarian cancer receive inadequate care and miss out on treatments that could add a year or more to their lives. Why? Because they mistakenly believe their OB/GYN or even a general surgeon has the expertise and knowledge needed to treat this disease. But nothing could be further from the truth. Only gynecological oncologists specialize in the complex surgery and treatment needed to effectively fight ovarian cancer.
Gynecologic oncologist best for treating ovarian cancer
Because most cases of ovarian cancer are found at later stages, the best course of treatment often involves extensive surgery and aggressive chemotherapy. A surgical procedure, called debulking, is performed to remove all visible traces of the disease. Taking out as much cancer as possible gives the chemotherapy the best chance of killing whatever is left.
