Focal Therapies for Prostate Cancer

Focal therapies use guided imaging techniques to target and treat prostate cancers that are confined to a small area of the prostate. These therapies include: focal high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), focal irreversible electroporation and focal cryotherapy.

Our Capabilities

UC Health is the only healthcare system in the region with prostate cancer specialists that can offer a variety of focal therapies as effective treatments for patients who have prostate cancer.

Help Along the Way

Answers to Your Questions about Focal Therapies

There are three main types of focal therapies:

Focal High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound

Uses focused ultrasound waves to heat and kill prostate cancer cells.

Focal Irreversible Electroporation

A procedure that uses a focused electrical current to destroy the prostate cancer cells.

Focal Cryotherapy

Small, needle-sized probe delivers a solution that freezes a portion of the prostate, in order to kill the cancer cells.

Each of these types of focal therapies can be used to target prostate cancer confined to an area of the prostate, or in some cases, the entire prostate.

These therapies are not usually done for more advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.

While not everyone may be a candidate for this treatment, we work with the patient to determine the best option for them.

There are a few benefits to choosing focal therapy treatments for prostate cancer:

  • Minimal side effects.

  • Minimal recovery time.

  • Can be done in an outpatient setting (does not require admittance to the hospital).

  • Noninvasive, or minimally invasive.

Talk with your care provider to determine if this is the best treatment for your situation.

Typically, focal therapies are used to treat localized prostate cancer, which is less advanced since it has not spread (metastasized) to surrounding areas of the body.

We can, however, use focal high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and focal cryotherapy for treating the entire prostate for prostate cancer when the cancer has spread further than just a small area of the prostate.
