Course  Overview

This program offers an in-depth educational opportunity for nurses, who are committed to providing comprehensive care and services to victims of sexual assault. The course will be conducted by current members of SART. The manuals and course outline will follow the IAFN, Ohio protocol and guidelines for surrounding states.

The course is open to RNs, physicians, advocates, EMS workers, law enforcement members and prosecutors interested in improving the care of sexual assault survivors. The course will specifically focus on the care of those survivors 14 years and older.

Nursing Contact Hours

CE activity 40 hours/week or 8 hours/day contact hours are provided by University of Cincinnati Medical Center. University of Cincinnati Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing education by the Ohio Board of Nursing through the OBN Approver Unit at UC Health (OBN-007-92). Contact hours are provided for single day and multiple day attendance.

Course Objectives

The purpose of this course is to help registered nurses become more proficient in the care of the sexual assault patient. This course is designed to educate the participant about the adolescent and adult sexual assault patient during the completion of the medical forensic exam.

Course Requirements

A written exam will be administered at the end of the class. After class, each attendee will be required to complete clinical experiences within his or her own community. This clinical portion should be completed within nine months of the didactic training. Clinical experiences may include: physical assessment including speculum exam; law enforcement ride-along; courtroom observation; crime lab observation; advocate role review; and health department responsibility. Following successful completion of the exam, a certificate of attendance will be presented to each participant.

Cost: Five Day Attendance – UC Health associates: $100; Non-UC Health associates: $350

           Single Day Attendance – UC Health associates: Free; Non-UC Health associates: $40
