“The accident happened when I went out for a bike ride with Winston, my black Lab. He was running alongside me on a leash. A woman who witnessed the accident said I lost my balance and fell to the ground, hitting my head. I was air lifted to University Hospital, where I spent 14 days in intensive care, diagnosed with an epidural hematoma. When I was transferred to Drake, I couldn’t walk, talk or dress myself. I started an intensive regimen of physical, occupational and speech therapy, first inpatient and later outpatient. I credit my recovery to my family, especially my wife, Sharon; my determination to return to police work; and the excellent care I received both at Drake Center and University Hospital.”
