{"id":53,"date":"2014-01-21T18:55:40","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T18:55:40","guid":{"rendered":"\/perioperative\/?page_id=53"},"modified":"2018-07-20T15:48:47","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T15:48:47","slug":"preparing-for-surgery","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.com\/perioperative\/for-patients\/preparing-for-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"Preparing for Surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-183 alignright\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2014\/01\/shutterstock_139854118-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"shutterstock_139854118\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2014\/01\/shutterstock_139854118-200x300.jpg 200w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2014\/01\/shutterstock_139854118.jpg 667w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/>THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING UC HEALTH<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Welcome to Cincinnati\u2019s academic health system.<br \/>\nOur goal is to provide excellent patient care<br \/>\nand customer service with all of the benefits of<br \/>\nacademic medicine.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">AS YOU PREPARE FOR SURGERY<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Expect a phone call from a nurse to review your<br \/>\nmedications and instructions<\/li>\n<li>You may be asked to meet with an anesthesiologist prior<br \/>\nto surgery depending on the type of surgery and your<br \/>\nmedical history<\/li>\n<li>Please notify your surgeon if you have a change in medical<br \/>\nhistory, a new hospitalization, or a new illness (cough,<br \/>\nshortness of breath, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, infection, or<br \/>\nrash) prior to surgery<\/li>\n<li>Plan to arrive 2 hours before your scheduled<br \/>\nsurgery time<\/li>\n<li>Please choose a designated contact person for receiving<br \/>\nmedical information while you are in surgery<\/li>\n<li>If you are going home after surgery, you will need a ride<br \/>\nhome and a responsible adult will need to stay with you the<br \/>\nfirst 24 hours<\/li>\n<li>Please follow all instructions or surgery may be delayed<br \/>\nor cancelled. Please refer to your After Visit Summary for<br \/>\nthe date and time of your surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">What to bring<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Photo ID<\/li>\n<li>Insurance Card<\/li>\n<li>Living Will\/Power of Attorney<\/li>\n<li>List of Medications<\/li>\n<li>CPAP Machine, if you have one<\/li>\n<li>Sunglasses, if surgery is around your eyes<\/li>\n<li>Any special garments, if requested by your surgeon<\/li>\n<li>A case for glasses or contacts<\/li>\n<li>Please leave valuables at home. Children under the age of 14<br \/>\nare not allowed to visit in the perioperative area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">DIET<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For your safety, your stomach must be empty prior<br \/>\nto surgery.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Please drink plenty of fluids the day prior to<br \/>\nsurgery and minimize caffeine<\/li>\n<li>Do not eat or drink after midnight. This includes<br \/>\nfood, alcohol, gum, mints, cough drops,<br \/>\ncigarettes, and chewing tobacco<\/li>\n<li>If instructed to take medication on the<br \/>\nmorning of surgery, please do so with the<br \/>\nsmallest amount of water necessary to swallow<br \/>\nthe pills<\/li>\n<li>Please complete bowel prep or special diet if<br \/>\ninstructed to do so by your surgeon<\/li>\n<li>Please stop use of illegal drugs prior to surgery<br \/>\nas they can increase your risk during surgery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">TOBACCO USE<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Surgery is a great opportunity to stop smoking. If possible,<br \/>\nstop smoking 6 weeks prior to surgery,<br \/>\nbut there are benefits to stopping for 12 hours<br \/>\nprior to surgery. For additional help to stop smoking,<br \/>\nplease call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">PERSONAL CARE<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Please shower the night before and the morning<br \/>\nof surgery with soap<\/li>\n<li>Please use chlorhexidine soap if instructed to do so<\/li>\n<li>Do not use lotions, perfumes, or powders on the<br \/>\nday of surgery<\/li>\n<li>Do not use deodorant if it is near the site of surgery<\/li>\n<li>Do not shave the site of surgery<\/li>\n<li>You may brush your teeth on the morning of surgery<\/li>\n<li>Please remove makeup, nail polish, contact lenses,<br \/>\nand any body piercings<\/li>\n<li>Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and secure<br \/>\nshoes (no flip flops or high heels).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">MEDICATIONS<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In most cases, you will be able to continue your<br \/>\nmedications, including on the day of surgery. However,<br \/>\nplease follow your doctor\u2019s instructions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0Aspirin<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is usually ok to continue your aspirin unless you are<br \/>\nhaving ear, brain, or spine surgery. Please confirm with<br \/>\nyour surgeon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<strong>NSAIDS<\/strong><br \/>\nPlease stop 7 days prior to surgery. Examples include<br \/>\nibuprofen and naproxen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<strong>Pain and Anxiety Medications<\/strong><br \/>\nContinue as usual. Examples include acetaminophen,<br \/>\nmethadone, oxycodone, hydrocodone, gabapentin,<br \/>\npregabalin, lorazepam, and alprazolam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0Blood Thinners<\/strong><br \/>\nPlease discuss a plan with the prescribing physician and<br \/>\nyour surgeon. Examples include warfarin, rivaroxaban,<br \/>\ndabigatran, apixaban, edoxaban, enoxaparin,<br \/>\nfondaparinux, clopidogrel, prasugrel,<br \/>\nand ticagrelor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0Diuretics (Water pills)<\/strong><br \/>\nPlease do not take on the day of surgery. Examples<br \/>\ninclude furosemide, torsemide, hydrochlorothiazide,<br \/>\nmetolazone, chlorthalidone, and spironolactone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<strong>ACE Inhibitors\/ARBs (for high blood pressure)<\/strong><br \/>\nPlease do not take on the day of surgery, unless<br \/>\nspecifically instructed to do so. Examples include<br \/>\nlisinopril, enalopril, captopril, benazepril, losartan,<br \/>\nand valsartan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Insulin and Oral Diabetes Medications<\/strong><br \/>\nPlease do not take on the day of surgery. Take half<br \/>\nof your long acting insulin (glargine or detemir)<br \/>\nthe night before.
