Eighth Annual Free Kids’ Bike Safety Rally Presented by UC Health Public Safety and Co-Sponsored by MetroParks of Butler County

West Chester, OH (Aug. 2, 2019)— To encourage more children and parents to increase their awareness of safe bicycling practices, UC Health’s West Chester Hospital is hosting a free interactive community bicycle safety rally on Saturday, Aug. 10. Kids are invited to bring their bicycles to test their skills on fun navigational courses, just like the courses that police departments use for training.

Police officers from the UC Health West Chester Hospital Public Safety Bike Unit and the West Chester Police Department will demonstrate proper helmet safety and check kids’ bikes for defects that could cause injuries. Kids will also have the chance to ride alongside police officers through the navigation course and receive helpful tips for safely riding and maneuvering their bikes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that bicyclists face a higher risk of crash-related injury and deaths than occupants of motor vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, the number of deaths from bicycle incidents increased 29% over an eight-year period, from 793 in 2010 to 1,024 in 2017. Of the 1,024 deaths in 2017, 679 involved motor vehicles.

This year’s rally will also include free skin cancer screenings provided by UC Health Dermatology. Screenings will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis and will be conducted in a private exam room inside the UC Health First Aid Center, located within the UC Health West Chester Hospital Fieldhouse. Each screening is approximately five minutes in length.
