Single-Site™ Robotic-Assisted Hysterectomy Now Available at West Chester Hospital

The first Single-Site™ robotic-assisted hysterectomy to be performed at West Chester Hospital was completed on March 4 by Amy Brenner, MD, gynecologic surgeon.

Using the most advanced technology available today, Dr. Brenner used the da Vinci® Si Robotic Surgical System to perform the delicate and complex operation through one tiny incision in the navel.

“The single-site procedure is considerably less invasive, resulting in much less discomfort for the patient,” says Dr. Brenner. “In addition, the belly-button approach naturally hides minimal scarring. From a cosmetic perspective, it’s virtually undetectable.”

In addition to virtually no scars, potential benefits of the single-site hysterectomy also includes minimal pain, low blood loss, fast recovery, a short hospital stay and high patient satisfaction. The surgery can be performed in about one hour with a typical hospital stay of 24 hours or less.

During the procedure, the surgeon sits at a console, viewing a 3-D, high-definition image of the patient’s anatomy. The surgeon uses controls below the viewer to move the instrument arms and camera. The surgeon is 100% in control of the da Vinci System during the procedure. In real-time, the system translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into more precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient.

The da Vinci system features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and special wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist. As a result, the robotic-assisted approach enables surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.

“The robotic system actually provides better access to, and a better view of, the abdomen for the surgeon. With the robot, I am able to perform a complete survey of the abdominal area.” adds Dr. Brenner. “This access is typically not achieved with a laparoscopic or a traditional surgical approach.”

West Chester Hospital offers a variety of robotically-assisted surgeries in addition to single-site hysterectomy, including urological, colorectal, general surgery and weight loss procedures.
