Statement Regarding Fire at UCMC on October 2, 2014

This morning, Thursday, Oct. 2, just before 8:30 a.m., a fire developed inside University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Fire crews contained and quickly extinguished by 8:45 am. No injuries have been reported. The ongoing investigation suggests it may have started in the cafeteria or the sub basement air handler. Although the fire has been extinguished, FD is using large fans to evacuate some lingering smoke.

The safety of our patients is our top priority and staff reacted quickly to laterally move some patients to different sections on the upper levels of the hospital. They will be returned to their rooms once all smoke is cleared. Surgical procedures were not interrupted. Families of patients are being notified. Once FD concludes we will assess any restoration needs and return to normal operations. This has been a great team approach from hospital staff. As a level one Trauma Hospital, this is what we drill for and prepare for year round.

Media staging area is in the fenced in lot just south of the Goodman Garage and are not to be on the UC Medical Campus.
