UC Health Board Members Appointed

Cincinnati, OH – October 19, 2010 UC Health today announced the appointment of the UC Health Board of Directors, as well as the official name change of the Ohio nonprofit corporation to “UC Health.”

“This is an exciting point to reach,” said Sandra W. Heimann, the Chairperson of the University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees. “Many people have worked very hard to get us to this milestone, and I am very grateful for their dedication and commitment to UC and to building a new health system that strengthens and reinforces the University’s long-standing commitment to driving innovation and discovery in medicine. I am especially grateful to George Strike and Fran Barrett, who have been critical in this overall effort. Without them, we would not be where we are today. I am also grateful to those individuals who have agreed to serve as UC Health board members. They are all exceptional.”

This transformation to UC Health bodes well for the health of our community,” said UC President Gregory H. Williams.  “We are committed to creating a fully integrated system with the best physicians and the most technologically advanced facilities in southwest Ohio.”

George L. Strike, President & CEO of Advance Textile Systems, will serve as the Chairman of the Board of UC Health. “I am thrilled to serve in this capacity,” said Mr. Strike, “and look forward to working closely with Chairperson Sandy Heimann, UC President Greg Williams, UC Health President & CEO Jim Kingsbury and the new board members. We have many opportunities and initiatives ahead of us, and this board, along with the board of the University and our executive leadership, as well as our partners at UC Physicians, will work closely together to take full advantages of those opportunities, and position UC Health as the leading provider in this region and beyond.”

“This is a terrific board, and I am honored to be able to work with such a distinguished group of business, civic and physician leaders who are committed to transforming healthcare in Greater Cincinnati,” said James A. Kingsbury, President & CEO. “This restructured board allows for greater physician representation and participation and enables us to recruit a greater number of board members from the community who can serve as ambassadors and advocates of UC Health.”

The board will have nine members; one appointment is pending. The eight currently appointed board members include:

  • C. Francis Barrett: UC Trustee; President and one of the founding members of the downtown Cincinnati law firm of Barrett & Weber.
  • Joseph Broderick, MD: UC Physician; Research Director of the UC Neuroscience Institute; Chairman of the UC Department of Neurology.

  • Andrew Filak, MD: Interim Dean and Vice President of Health Affairs.
  • James A. Kingsbury: President & CEO, UC Health.

Additionally, although UC Health will continue to be responsible for all ongoing operations of the UC Health system, for business and strategic reasons, a new Ohio nonprofit corporation called UC Healthcare System has been formed to serve as its parent company. UC Healthcare System will be governed by a five-member board that will also include Messrs. Strike (serving also as Chairman of this board) and Barrett. The remaining three board members of UC Healthcare System will include:

  • Judge Sylvia Sieve Hendon: Appellate Court Judge (First District Court); University of Cincinnati Medical Center Board Member.

James A. Kingsbury will serve as the President & Chief Executive of UC Healthcare System, as well as UC Health.

Finally, the necessary legal steps have been taken to change the name of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati to UC Health. Although the new UC Health brand was launched last month, the formal name change was ratified only this past Friday through various legal filings.
