UC Health Opens Region’s First Oncology Primary Care Clinic

Melissa Erickson, MD, leads the new UC Health Oncology Primary Care Clinic.

Clinic Meets Specific Needs of Cancer Patients’ Long-Term Health

CINCINNATI (Nov. 20, 2019) — UC Health opened the region’s first oncology primary care clinic on Nov. 1, 2019, designed to deliver primary care services specifically targeted to the needs of adults with a history of cancer. The clinic is located within the UC Health Barrett Cancer Center and is open for appointments on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Oncology Primary Care Clinic is staffed by Melissa Erickson, MD, family medicine physician, clinical director of the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute’s Cancer Survivorship Program and cancer survivorship team member at Cincinnati Children’s. Dr. Erickson brings extensive experience in cancer survivorship to the clinic.

“Each cancer diagnosis brings its own set of unique health impacts to every individual, requiring a subspecialized care approach,” Dr. Erickson said. “Our goal at the Oncology Primary Care Clinic is to manage any long-term effects from cancer treatment while maximizing patients’ overall wellness through proven expertise and compassionate care.”

In the U.S., 70% of people living with cancer have a second chronic medical condition. When a patient is going through cancer treatment, their other chronic conditions sometimes are overlooked or left untreated. UC Health’s Oncology Primary Care Clinic will give patients the opportunity to receive increased levels of care for those chronic illnesses in addition to their cancer, treating the whole person.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to provide such a needed service to our cancer patients,” said William Barrett, MD, director of the UC Cancer Institute and professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the UC College of Medicine. “We are grateful to Dr. Erickson for taking on this most important role.”

The UC Cancer Institute is the region’s only academic-based cancer program and is Cincinnati’s No. 1 preferred cancer care provider. More than 90 specialists rely on the latest cancer research to among them treat 34 types of cancer through 10 centers of excellence, all which focus on specific cancer types.

The Oncology Primary Care Clinic’s location in the Barrett Cancer Center will help facilitate communication between patients’ primary care and oncology teams—though the clinic will also accept patients receiving their cancer care at another health system.
