UC Health Receives Environmentally Preferred Sourcing Award from Vizient

UC Health recognized for sustainable purchasing decisions

CINCINNATI (Sept. 19, 2019) — UC Health, Greater Cincinnati’s academic health system, has been named a top performer in the Environmentally Preferred Sourcing Excellence Award category by Vizient, Inc.

UC Health was the top performer among Vizient members in the complex care medical center cohort and was recognized for making a positive contribution to human and environmental health through responsible purchasing decisions. The award was presented Sept. 18 during the 2019 Vizient Connections Education Summit in Las Vegas.

“We spend more than $69 million annually in this area, and we are proud to lead the way in promoting sustainability through our purchasing and supply chain decisions,” said Robert Wiehe, senior vice president and chief supply chain and logistics officer for UC Health.

Award winners were selected based on their purchase of products containing at least one environmentally preferred attribute as a percentage of their Vizient spend. Participating hospitals were divided into four cohorts and scoring for the awards was based on purchasing data measured by the member’s most recent 12 month data submission.

“The health care products purchased by hospitals matter beyond just clinical outcomes and cost savings. They also impact the health of their staff, patients and the environment in the communities they serve,” said Kristina Bourke, group senior vice president, strategic sourcing partnerships and programs at Vizient. “We commend UC Health for its leadership in implementing and maintaining an environmentally friendly purchasing program that benefits patients and improves the sustainability of the community.”
