Joseph obtained three bachelor degrees (biomedical engineering, materials science and psychology) from Johns Hopkins University. He received his medical degree from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine where he served as president of the medical student body. He completed his residency at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine as a chief resident.
