West Chester, OH – West Chester Hospital, which was recently recognized by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), will be offering a free educational seminar on colon cancer and colonoscopies.

Many candidates for colonoscopy are never tested because they are uncomfortable talking about it with their physician or are anxious about the procedure. To help relieve fears and provide information, West Chester Hospital will host a free colon cancer education seminar Wednesday, March 10, from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Plaza Conference Center of the hospital.

Physicians will explain what a colonoscopy is and what happens if an abnormality is discovered. Attendees can talk one-on-one with the physicians after the meeting and tour the hospital’s endoscopy unit where procedures are performed.

Space is limited so call 513-298-3000 today to R.S.V.P.

The endoscopy unit at West Chester Hospital was one of only 32 units in the country to be recognized by the ASGE in 2010, and was one of only two in Ohio. In total, only 166 endoscopy units nationally have been recognized. The recognition comes as part of a national program by the ASGE dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy. The program honors endoscopy units that follow the ASGE guidelines on privileging, quality assurance, endoscopy reprocessing and infection control.

“The ASGE is the leader in setting standards of excellence in endoscopy through safety guidelines and training of its members so that patients receive the best and safest care possible,” says Pradeep Bekal, MD, medical director of gastroenterology. “We are very proud that our unit was recognized for their efforts and success in providing top-quality care for our patients.”

To receive recognition, a West Chester Hospital endoscopy representative had to complete an education course, the hospital had to show proof of successful accreditation by the Joint Commission, prove that ASGE guidelines are being followed, and submit an application for recognition.

Endoscopy is the medical practice of diagnosing and treating diseases of the gastrointestinal tract without incisions, through the use of flexible, thin tubes called endoscopes.
