West Chester Hospital Receives Quality and Efficiency Designation for Hip & Knee Programs, Spine Surgery

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield have named UC Health West Chester Hospital a “Blue Distinction Center” in Hip and Knee Programs and Spine Surgery.

The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care. The criterion for designation also includes quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety, as well as cost-efficiency in delivering such quality care.

“The physicians and clinicians at West Chester Hospital are proud to receive this important quality designation,” said West Chester Hospital President and CEO, Kevin Joseph, MD. “Considering the rigorous selection criteria set forth by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program, this recognition is confirmation that knee, hip and spine patients who receive treatment at West Chester Hospital are receiving a higher level of quality, and experience improved outcomes with lower rates of complications and readmissions.”

This designation is based on careful, evidence-based, objective criteria and input from expert physicians and medical organizations. Further, it provides the community with a tool to help them make better informed health care decisions. This designation also enables employers working with their local Blue Plan, to tailor benefits which meet quality and cost objectives for their workforces.

West Chester Hospital has the resources to provide a multi-disciplinary expert team of orthopaedic surgeons and operating teams, physical and occupational therapists, program coordinators and pharmacists for each individual case. Some of the advanced procedures performed at West Chester Hospital include:

• Total and partial knee replacements
• Total hip replacement
• Hip resurfacing
• Total shoulder replacement
• Spine surgery including minimally invasive spine surgery and spinal fusion
• Shoulder and knee arthroscopy
• ACL repair
• Podiatry surgery

Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area; for details, contact your local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable healthcare. Each facility’s cost care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on www.bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on provider’s in-network status or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Neither Blue Cross or Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible for non-covered charges or other losses or damage resulting from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or care received from Blue Distinction or other providers.
