West Chester, OH – West Chester Hospital, in cooperation with Hoxworth Blood Center, will hold a community blood drive on Friday, April 2, in the hospital’s Plaza Conference Center (level A) from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Donating blood is safe and easy. Donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 years old with a signed parental consent) and in good health. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and bring identification to donate. It is recommended that donors eat a good meal and drink plenty of water within four hours before donating.

To schedule an appointment to donate, visit www.hoxworth.org/groups/WCMC or call 513-558-1343. Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are always welcome.

“West Chester Hospital is excited to team up with Hoxworth Blood Center to encourage everyone who can donate blood to be a hero to those who need it,” says Carol King, senior vice president, West Chester Hospital. “We see the need for blood products first hand here at the hospital and know that donated blood can be the difference between life and death for a patient.”

More than 6,500 pints of blood had to be brought into the greater Cincinnati area over the past year because of a critical shortage of blood donors. Although nearly 40% of the population is eligible to donate blood, only 5% actually does.

“We are very pleased that West Chester Hospital is hosting a community blood drive. Not only will this give individuals an opportunity to experience this new state-of-the-art medical facility, but it will give them the opportunity to save lives in the community through blood donation,” says Hoxworth director Ronald Sacher, MD.

All donors who attend the April 2 blood drive will be entered into a drawing for a special prize. In addition, all donors throughout the Greater Cincinnati area will be entered into a grand prize drawing for every pint of blood they give now through June 30. Prizes include a laptop, Nintendo Wii, Sony PSP, Garmin GPS, Xbox 360, gift cards and the grand prize of an all-expenses-paid cruise for two, including airfare.

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, is on a campaign to recruit “100,000 Donors, 100,000 Heroes.” Founded in 1938, Hoxworth serves 32 hospitals in 17 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. Annually, Hoxworth collects over 90,000 units of blood from local donors. At least 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors are essential each day to keep up with the demands of tri-state hospitals and their patients.
