Internal medicine residents perform invasive bedside procedures, yet there is no standard for determination of competence. Furthermore, while residents are required to perform procedures, procedural encounters are fewer than ever before due to the availability of services like Interventional Radiology and Intravenous Access nurses. As such, the between procedures can be great. In this study, we aim to develop a validated tool for measurements of competence in performing a paracentesis, and determine the interval at which competence declines.
