Fifty-year-old David Waits knows what it’s like to lie in a hospital bed, day after day, waiting for a perfect heart donor match and a new chance at life. Today, he waits no more. Waits received a heart transplant at University of Cincinnati (UC) Medical Center on Feb. 2 and is steadily regaining his life with his wife, Carol, and daughter Brittany. Louis B. Louis, IV, MD, chief of cardiac surgery at UC Medical Center and assistant professor of surgery, performed his eight-hour heart transplant surgery, the first in years at UC Medical Center. No other hospitals in the region perform heart transplantation.
