West Chester Hospital Receives Donation for Innovative Patient Tablet Program

WEST CHESTER, OH — A check for $31,200 has been presented by DE Incorporated, a national design/build company based in Cincinnati, to UC Health’s West Chester Hospital, and will be used to purchase 50 new tablets for use by hospitalized patients.

West Chester Hospital’s patient tablet program enables hospital caregivers to provide patients with immediate, detailed information about their medical care and hospital stay, along with educational and entertainment options, all within a digital environment. 

DEI and Extermital Pest Control partnered with Air Solution Company and other friends and supporters in the community to raise the much-needed funds to accommodate the increased inpatient hospital admissions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During these uncertain times, I feel it is more important than ever to be able to communicate with our friends and family who are in the hospital,” said Joyce Wood of DE Incorporated. “Since hospital visitation is limited, it is reassuring to be able to see and hear your loved ones and know how they are doing, even if it is done virtually. This project is personal and very important to me.”

“The tablets are easy to use and helped me connect with my care providers. It also provided me with more information,” stated Rajeshkumar Acharaya, a patient at West Chester Hospital. “It is also nice that you can use it to order your meals based on your dietary restrictions.”

“This generous donation to West Chester Hospital is a wonderful and much-appreciated gift, not only for our patients, but also for our staff, as it enables our physicians and staff to make more meaningful connections with those we provide care to,” stated Tom Daskalakis, chief administrative officer at West Chester Hospital. “These tablets enable our patients to view their scheduled exams, test results and care plan almost immediately, which greatly enhances our communication as well as the relationships we build with our patients.”

The My UC Health Bedside tablet program was first launched in 2016, with West Chester Hospital being one of just a few hospitals in the U.S. to utilize this patient-centered technology for improved communication with patients to increase their involvement in their own care plan.

Upon admission to the hospital, each patient is offered a tablet, with which they may easily and conveniently navigate to perform the following tasks:

  • Monitor recent vital sign numbers and lab results.
  • Send questions to their care team.
  • Review educational materials about various health topics specific to the patient’s diagnosis.
  • Learn more about members of their care team.
  • Add appointments and events to a personal calendar.
  • Make non-urgent requests – i.e. ice chips, water, snacks, room cleaning, etc.
  • Use various entertainment applications and access the Wi-Fi.
  • Enjoy virtual visits with family members, loved ones and friends.
