UC Health Celebrates Opening of Surgical Department Expansion

CINCINNATI - Opening Marks Major Milestone in Clifton Campus Revitalization Project. 


UC Health celebrated the opening of its new surgical department expansion through a ceremonial ribbon cutting today. 

This expansion marks a major milestone in the Clifton Campus Revitalization Project, which is transforming the physical facilities of the Clifton medical campus to reflect the world-class care offered by its highly skilled teams who provide lifesaving care every day. A new emergency department space is also set to open later this year as part of the largest project in the health system’s history.

The new surgical department includes 13 brand new preoperative exam rooms, eight state-of-the-art operating rooms and 12 top-tier post-anesthesia care unit pods. These improvements will add operating room capacity while improving the capabilities and readiness of UC Medical Center. The first procedures in this new space will take place in March. 

“This transformation in our surgical department underscores our commitment to evolving how we provide medical care and how our patients experience healthcare with us. Today’s gathering recognizes this steadfast commitment now—and into the future,” Cory Shaw, UC Health president and CEO, stated.

The campus’ 108-year-old surgical amphitheater was also protected during the project preserve this piece of history for our community. The historical amphitheater was used as a classroom, where University of Cincinnati College of Medicine students, residents and physicians gathered to watch surgeries in real time. 

UC Health is the Greater Cincinnati region’s only academic health system, offering complex care through 90+ specialties and subspecialties. 

“As the region’s only adult academic health system and adult Level 1 trauma center, we have unique capabilities at UC Medical Center, and across the entire system,” Rob Wiehe, EVP/COO, UC Health and Chief Administrative Officer, University of Cincinnati Medical Center, said. “The surgery department expansion was designed for the patient’s comfort and for our care teams to easily access equipment during procedures.”

UC Medical Center is part of UC Health. Its Clifton Campus houses the region’s only adult Level I trauma center, nationally recognized Comprehensive Stroke Center, a Level 4 perinatal center, an adult burn center and a pioneering transplant program for heart, liver, pancreas and kidney transplantation.
