UC Health Hospitals Nationally Recognized by Leapfrog Hospital Safety and Quality Grades

May. 3, 2023

West Chester Hospital and UC Medical Center received high ratings for providing patients with outstanding quality care.

UC Health is excited to share exceptional news regarding our national reputation ratings from the bi-annual Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades.

Today The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit hospital safety rating system, announced its spring safety ratings for ~3,000 general acute-care hospitals in the U.S. These results include letter grades on an A through F scale that are based on patient safety-related data from 2019 to 2022. Much of this comes from publicly reported data of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Both of UC Health’s hospitals achieved high ratings by prioritizing patient safety and positive patient outcomes.

West Chester Hospital: Improved to an “A” grade. Placing WCH as top third in the nation.

  • 2023 – A
  • 2022 – B
  • 2021 – B
  • 2020 – C

UC Medical Center: Maintained “B” grade. Placing UCMC as top 50% in the nation.

  • 2023 – B
  • 2022 – B
  • 2021 – C
  • 2020 – D

Top improvements for both hospitals: Patient Experience and Hospital-Acquired Conditions

“We are grateful to the Leapfrog Group for honoring West Chester Hospital and UC Medical Center with national distinctions in providing patients with outstanding quality care in many areas,” UC Health President & CEO Cory Shaw said. “Knowing that a portion of these stellar outcomes were achieved during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic is truly extraordinary.”

Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group stated, “This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic. It’s truly remarkable that UC Health’s hospitals received high marks despite those challenges. I congratulate all the clinicians, leaders, employees and volunteers who helped make this possible.”

West Chester Hospital and UC Medical Center continue to make great strides in improving and building upon positive outcomes, while further striving to engage and focus our workforce on safety and an environment of zero preventable harm.

Our performance in the Leapfrog Safety grades at both sites reinforces the ongoing notable achievements accomplished by the contributions of many clinicians and employees, working together as a team with our patients at the center of all we do.

Congratulations—and thank you for strengthening our Journey to Better.
