About the Program

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational Competency Areas, Goals, and Objectives (CAGOs) for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Purpose

The purpose of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center is to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to become a successful Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Ambulatory Care. The 12-month program offers the ability to provide pharmaceutical care to a broad scope of Ambulatory Medicine patients. The resident will be prepared to develop novel ambulatory care services, teach, and practice independently.

Program Summary

This 12-month (52 week) PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to develop Clinical Pharmacy Specialists in Ambulatory Care. The program offers the ability to provide pharmaceutical care to a broad scope of ambulatory medicine patients. Residents will be prepared to develop novel and sustainable ambulatory care services, serve as skilled teachers, practice independently, and contribute to the advancement of the pharmacy profession. Teaching opportunities and a teaching certificate are available through the University of Cincinnati James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy.

Program Requirements

Requirements for entrance into the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency include:

• Pharm.D. degree from an AACP-accredited College of Pharmacy
• Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency
• Pharmacist licensure in the state of Ohio

The PGY2 Residency Certificate will be awarded with the completion of all established program requirements, including achievement of Required Competency Areas, Goals, and Objectives for PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency.

Pharmacy Practice Experiences

The staffing component of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency includes staffing in the UCMC Anticoagulation Clinic ½ day per week longitudinally beginning in August for the duration of the residency year.

Academia

PGY2 residents will participate in teaching at the University of Cincinnati James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy. Opportunities include didactic teaching, small group facilitation, and precepting. An optional teaching certificate is available.

Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Administration

The resident will work longitudinally on administrative projects, including developing a business plan and contributing to process improvement initiatives.

Pharmacy Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement

The PGY2 resident will present one patient case identifying pharmacy-specific process improvement opportunities at the monthly MMI case conference and prepare a written summary for inclusion in the quarterly MMI continuing education publication.

Residency Research

The PGY2 resident will participate in a longitudinal research project, developing a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Residents will present research results at professional conferences such as the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference.

Professional Conferences

Residents will attend and present at professional meetings, including the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, Vizient Consortium Pharmacy Network Meeting, Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference, and UCMC Pharmacy Research Symposium.
