James J. Augsburger, MD, is the Dr. E. Vernon and Eloise C. Smith Chair and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye tumors, including uveal and conjunctival melanomas, retinoblastomas, metastatic carcinomas to the eye, ocular lymphomas, hemangiomas of the retina and choroid and other benign and malignant tumors in or on the eye.
Dr. Augsburger attended Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio (BS, 1970) and then the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (MD, 1974). He completed a medical Internship at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio (1974-5) and a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (1975-8) followed by a fellowship in retina and ocular oncology at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, PA (1978-80). He joined the attending staff of Wills Eye Hospital immediately following this fellowship and remained there in ocular oncology practice until his relocation to Cincinnati in 1999. Between 1999 and 2014, Dr. Augsburger was chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati. He also served as director of the Ocular Oncology and Diagnostic Ocular Ultrasonography Service of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Dr. Augsburger is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also belongs to the American Ophthalmological Society, Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Club Jules Gonin (International Retina Society), Macula Society and Retina Society. He is author or coauthor of nearly 300 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and over 50 published book chapters. He has lectured widely in the U.S. and abroad on many ocular oncology topics.
