Hani Kushlaf, MD, is a Professor of Neurology and Pathology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He holds multiple leadership roles, serving as the Director of the Division of Neuromuscular Medicine, Director of Neuromuscular Research, Director of the MDA Care Center, Director of the CMTA Center of Excellence, and Director of the UC Health Electrodiagnostic and Neuromuscular Ultrasound Laboratory within the Department of Neurology & Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition to his roles at UC, Dr. Kushlaf is a neuromuscular physician at the Comprehensive Neuromuscular Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, and he serves as a muscle and nerve pathologist in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Dr. Kushlaf’s academic journey began with his MD from Tripoli Medical University in Tripoli, Libya. He further enhanced his expertise by earning a Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Research from the University of Cincinnati. Following his neurology residency at the University of Kentucky, where he served as chief resident, Dr. Kushlaf pursued advanced subspecialty training, completing three fellowships in muscle disease and peripheral nerve disorders at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as well as an advanced neuromuscular medicine fellowship at Duke University. He is board-certified in neurology, neuromuscular medicine, electrodiagnostic medicine, neuromuscular ultrasound, and clinical neuromuscular pathology. Notably, Dr. Kushlaf founded the neuromuscular medicine fellowship at the University of Cincinnati and served as its fellowship director for 12 years.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Kushlaf has been recognized with several national awards, including the Junior Recognition Award from the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) and twice the AANEM President's Research Initiative Award.
Dr. Kushlaf’s professional affiliations are extensive. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), the American Neurological Association (ANA), and the AANEM. He has served as both Chair and Vice Chair of the neuromuscular special interest group of the ANA and is currently the Chair of the Neuromuscular Section of the AAN. Internationally, he contributes as a member of the guidelines committee of the World Muscle Society and participates in the IMACS (International Myositis Assessment and Clinical Studies Group) myositis antibody special interest group, as well as the IMACS working group for the consensus statement on myositis autoantibody testing.
Dr. Kushlaf’s principal clinical interests encompass autoimmune and hereditary neuromuscular disorders. He has served as principal investigator on more than 45 clinical trials and has published widely on topics including Pompe disease, myasthenia gravis, inclusion body myositis, CIDP, ALS, and VCP multisystem proteinopathy, among others.
Finally, Dr. Kushlaf is dedicated to advancing the field through scholarly service. He serves as an Ad Hoc reviewer for several neurology journals and is a member of the Editorial Board of Muscle & Nerve.
