Steven Zhang, MD is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the UC College of Medicine. He specializes in the comprehensive treatment of the full spectrum of spinal disorders—including degenerative conditions, scoliosis, trauma, infections, and tumors—with a particular clinical interest in complex spinal deformity and revision surgery.
Dr. Zhang believes that the most successful outcomes are rooted in a personalized, patient-centered approach. His primary goal is to reduce pain, restore long-term function, and improve quality of life. Dr. Zhang ensures his patients exhaust all appropriate non-operative treatments before considering any surgical intervention. When surgery is necessary, Dr. Zhang uses both traditional and minimally invasive, motion-preserving techniques whenever possible to reduce postoperative pain, minimize scarring, and accelerate the recovery process while maintaining our natural flexibility.
Dr. Zhang’s surgical foundation is built upon some of the country’s most rigorous institutions. After earning his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, he attended medical school at Stanford University. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania and further refined his expertise through a combined Orthopedic Surgery and Neurosurgery fellowship in adult and pediatric spine surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. This dual-discipline training allows him to approach complex spinal issues with an exceptionally broad and sophisticated surgical perspective.
As an active researcher and academic, Dr. Zhang is at the forefront of spinal innovation. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and frequently presents his findings at national conferences. His research, supported by various academic grants, is dedicated to one primary goal: improving patient outcomes and safety. By integrating his ongoing research into his clinical practice, he ensures his patients receive the most advanced care available. He is also a member of the North American Spine Society.
Outside of his surgical and research practice, Dr. Zhang is an avid runner and enjoys exploring the local hiking trails and the outdoors. He also has a passion for cooking and spending quality time with his family. He is dedicated to teaching medical students and residents and believes in training the next generation of surgeons.
