About Our Program

What is CarFit?

CarFit is an educational program that helps older adults ensure their car is properly adjusted—or “fits” them—for maximum comfort and safety. The program also provides information about community resources that support safe driving and continued mobility. A properly fitted vehicle can improve driver safety and reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a crash.

Who should attend?

CarFit is designed for older adult drivers who want to:

  • Improve comfort and safety while driving

  • Learn how to properly adjust their vehicle

  • Maintain independence and confidence on the road

Caregivers and family members supporting older drivers may also find the information helpful.

Why is CarFit important for older drivers?

Older drivers are often among the safest drivers—they are more likely to wear seat belts and less likely to speed or drive impaired. However, when crashes do occur, older adults are more likely to be seriously injured because they are more physically fragile. Making sure they properly fit their cars significantly reduces injury risk and improves safety for both the driver and others on the road.

What happens during a CarFit check?

At a CarFit event, trained technicians and/or health professionals work one-on-one with participants to review how well their car is adjusted for them. The check focuses on comfort, visibility, and safe positioning to improve driving performance and reaction times.

What areas of the vehicle are reviewed?

A CarFit check covers 12 key areas related to driver safety and comfort, including:

  • Proper mirror positioning to reduce blind spots

  • Safe distance from the steering wheel (at least 10 inches)

  • Correct seat belt positioning

  • Proper head restraint adjustment

  • Foot positioning on gas and brake pedals to reduce fatigue and improve reaction time

How long does a CarFit check take?

Each CarFit check takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Is this a driving test?

No. CarFit is not a driving test, and no on-road driving is required. The program is educational and supportive, focusing on improving vehicle setup—not evaluating driving ability.

Where is CarFit offered?

CarFit events are held in community settings, such as senior centers and community organizations. Participants attend with their own car.

Can CarFit be brought to our organization or community group?

Yes. CarFit events can be scheduled for community organizations and groups interested in promoting driver safety and mobility for older adults.

Will this program help me feel safer behind the wheel?

Yes. A key goal of CarFit is to help drivers feel safer and more confident by ensuring their car is properly adjusted to support safe, comfortable driving.
