What is STOP THE BLEED® training?
STOP THE BLEED® is a national education program developed by the American College of Surgeons to train people to spot life-threatening bleeding and control it until help arrives.
Who can take a STOP THE BLEED® course?
Anyone can take the course. It is designed for people with little or no medical training and can be taught to adults, teens, community groups, workplaces and organizations.
Do I need medical experience to participate?
No. STOP THE BLEED® is specifically designed for everyday citizens. All skills are taught step-by-step using hands-on practice.
What skills will I learn?
Participants learn how to:
Recognize life-threatening bleeding
Apply direct pressure using hands
Pack a wound
Apply a tourniquet correctly
How long is the training?
Course length may vary by location and format, but most sessions are short while still allowing hands-on practice.
Is STOP THE BLEED® only for mass casualty events?
No. While STOP THE BLEED® is critical during large-scale emergencies, the skills are just as important for everyday incidents such as car juries, household emergencies or recreational injuries.
Is the training evidence-based?
Yes. STOP THE BLEED® incorporates hemorrhage control research and lifesaving techniques from military medicine in the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars, as well as civilian trauma care.
Can UC Health provide STOP THE BLEED® training for our organization?
Yes. UC Health offers STOP THE BLEED® training for community groups, schools, workplaces and organizations. Group training options may be available. and organizations. Group training options may be available.
