Help Along the Way

Answers to Your Preservation for Cochlear Implantation Questions

At UC Health, our surgeons use a “soft technique,” where an electrode is inserted slowly along an opposite wall of the cochlea to preserve the remaining cell function where the residual hearing remains.

The electrode is softer or more flexible and shorter than a traditional cochlear implant, causing less microscopic tissue damage.

This approach allows patients to maintain their natural hearing through the ear canal in the areas in which their hearing cells remain intact.

This procedure is ideal for patients that have functional hearing cells but have enough hearing loss that cannot be aided with traditional hearing aids.

Conditions that can be treated with cochlear implant preservation include sensorineural hearing loss caused by age, genetics, loud noise exposure or cochlear otosclerosis.
