Program Purpose Statement
The UC Health – University of Cincinnati Medical Center PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency is a
one-year program based upon ASHP standards and the ASHP Supplemental Standard and Learning Objectives for
Residency Training in Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Practice. The aim of the program is development of
well-rounded critical care practitioners that possess the clinical database, attitudes, and skills necessary
to practice successfully in multiple settings.
Upon successful completion of the PGY2 Emergency Medicine Residency Program, the individual should be able
to practice as an independent clinical pharmacy specialist in critical care with sufficient preparation to
sit for the Board Certified Emergency Medicine Pharmacists (BCEMP) examination. The resident will also
develop a teaching portfolio by precepting Doctor of Pharmacy candidates, delivering didactic lectures at
the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy, and providing in-services for pharmacists, nurses, and
physicians.
The program focuses on provision of evidence-based, patient-focused care. The residency includes training in
the emergency department, specialized intensive care units (e.g., surgical; medical; neuroscience; cardiovascular),
toxicology, pre-hospital medicine, and research. These areas are represented through direct patient care activities,
clinical and didactic teaching activities, completion of a longitudinal research project, and patient-oriented
longitudinal practice experience.
Program Requirements
Entrance into the PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency requires the following:
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy
- Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency

Certificate Program (two-day seminar plus longitudinal didactic and small group teaching).
The emergency medicine pharmacy resident will participate in the Emergency Medicine Elective and the
Antithrombotic Management Elective at the University of Cincinnati James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy.
This includes developing and providing two (2) formal 2-hour lectures, developing and facilitating 3–5 case
discussions, and writing 10 exam questions specific to their material for midterm and final exams. The
resident will also have the opportunity to serve as primary preceptor for at least one PharmD candidate on
an APPE. Additional didactic and experiential opportunities (IPPE and APPE) are built into learning
experiences throughout the year.
Education of pharmacists and other healthcare professionals is integrated longitudinally throughout the
program, including inter-professional grand rounds presentations, resident-led clinical presentations,
nursing education, and other opportunities.
Pharmacy Grand Rounds
The PGY2 emergency medicine pharmacy resident will develop one 30-minute presentation providing 0.5 hour of
ACPE CE focused on the background of their research project. They are responsible for presenting 30 minutes
of additional ACPE CE in the spring focused on a topic and format (didactic, small group discussion, pro/con
debate, etc.) of their choice.
Pharmacy Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement
PGY2 pharmacy residents will present one pharmacy-specific process improvement opportunity at the monthly
Pharmacy MMI case conference. A written summary offering Medication Safety CE will be prepared for inclusion
in the quarterly MMI continuing education publication.
Medication Use Evaluation (MUE)
PGY2 pharmacy residents will conduct a MUE coordinated through an assigned committee. The MUE is completed
within the first half of the academic year and will be presented by the resident to the Drug Policy

trauma stats. The PGY2 emergency medicine resident will spend one month longitudinally working with the
Pulmonary Consult team to ensure safe antibiotic use in cystic fibrosis patients. Residents are also
integrated into the weekly clinical pharmacist call schedule. The PGY2 emergency medicine resident will be
scheduled for rotating weekend clinical coverage (average of every third weekend) as well as three holidays.
