Preparing for the experience of a lifetime
From the moment you learned about your pregnancy, you’ve been planning every step of the way for the delivery. To help make your labor and delivery everything you and your family have hoped for, the staff at University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s Women’s Services has designed educational programs and birthing options to meet your every need. We are honored to be a part of your special birth experience.
The following classes are offered to help you and your family prepare for the new arrival:
Center for Women and Infants Maternity Unit Tours (Cost: Free)
Prepare for your baby’s birth with a tour of the Center for Women and Infants. We discuss what to expect during your stay in labor and delivery and postpartum. The tour includes Obstetrics Special Care Unit and Postpartum/Mother-Baby Unit. Our NICU is available for tour upon request with the exception of flu season. Family and children are welcome, however children under 14 are restricted from all units during flu season.

Baby Care Basics (Cost: $30)
This two hour class will help families learn how to bathe, diaper, dress, hold, comfort, and feed an infant. This class includes demonstrations and interactions on proper, safe methods. We also provide information about safe sleep, car seat safety and home safety. Parents will go home with a free newborn sleep sack to use once your infant has arrived.

Baby Care Basics for Adoptive Parents (Cost: $30)
This two hour class will help adoptive parents prepare for the arrival of their baby by learning the basics of baby care. We include hands-on how to bathe, diaper, dress, hold, and comfort infants. We also provide information on safe sleep, car seat safety and home safety. Instructors for this class are licensed RNs who are experienced adoptive parents themselves. Parents will go home with a free newborn sleep sac to use once your infant has arrived.

Prepared Childbirth One-Day Workshop (Cost: $80)
Our one-day Prepared Childbirth class will prepare you for your labor and delivery experience. Topic discussions include anatomy and physiology changes for mother and baby during labor, identifying signs and symptoms of labor, coping and comfort measures for natural and medicated labor, how your partner can support mother and baby during and after labor and delivery, hospital procedures, vaginal and cesarean delivery methods, characteristics your newborn will exhibit and perform, and post-delivery care you will receive. During class, we will watch “Understanding Birth”, a movie depicting the labor and delivery experience. This class also includes a tour of the Center for Women and Infants and a complimentary gift.

Natural Childbirth Techniques (Cost: $30)
This interactive class is completely devoted to relaxation; visual and breathing techniques; body position transitions; and partner tips for pain, emotional and physical support during labor and delivery. Our goal is to prepare you and your partner for natural delivery of your newborn. Bring your labor partner with you!

A Little Bit of Everything (Cost: $80)
This great refresher class will include labor and birth education and preparation tips, comfort techniques during labor and delivery, and pain management during cesarean and vaginal deliveries. Newborn care topics include hands-on demonstration and interaction for how to bathe, diaper, dress, hold, comfort, and feed an infant. Newborn safety information is discussed and demonstrated including safe sleep habits and environment, proper car seat safety and home safety. Parents receive a free gift to ensure safe sleep habits for your newborn. A tour of the Center for Women and Infants is also included.

Breastfeeding (Cost: $25)
This two-hour class educates you and your significant other on the importance and benefits of breastfeeding. The information will support and guide you through breastfeeding during your hospital stay and the early weeks at home. Our breastfeeding instructors are experienced Board Certified Lactation Consultants. We encourage partner participation however children are not recommended to attend.

Infant CPR and Baby Care Basics (combo class) (Cost: $50)
This three hour class offers hands-on instruction and educational information about how to recognize medical emergencies, seek emergency assistance for your infant, and how to perform CPR and relieve choking. You also have the opportunity to learn via hands-on interaction on how to bathe, diaper, dress, hold, comfort, and feed an infant. We provide information about safe sleep, car seat safety and home safety. Parents will go home with a free newborn sleep sack to use once your infant has arrived.
