This recognition acknowledges the hospital’s commitment to providing exceptional care and support for mothers and their newborns.
Following an extensive evaluation process that involved recommendations from over 10,000 healthcare professionals across the country, UC Medical Center emerged as one of the 384 top-performing hospitals nationwide. Out of these 384 facilities, UC Medical Center was among the distinguished group of 159 hospitals bestowed with the five-ribbon distinction, while the remaining 225 hospitals received a four-ribbon rating.
“This is an honor for the hardworking professionals that are dedicated to the women and families that have their babies at UC Medical Center,” Michael Thomas, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology said.
Distinguished as the first and only Level IV maternity hospital in Greater Cincinnati, and one of just seven Level IV maternity hospitals in Ohio, UC Medical Center serves as the regional perinatal health care center able to treat the most complex medical conditions during pregnancy, labor and postpartum.

UC Medical Center is the first in the state of Ohio and one of only 34 hospitals nationwide to be certified by The Joint Commission for Perinatal Care. This designation means that UC Medical Center works to reduce infant mortality rates, maternal complications, unnecessary induction of labor and prematurity rates—which can lead to infant mortality.
Last year, U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, named UC Medical Center a 2022-2023 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy) as well as ranked it among the top four hospitals in Greater Cincinnati. It was also named among the 2022 World’s Best Hospitals for clinical excellence by Newsweek.
