Cincinnati, OH - University of Cincinnati Medical Center has joined the Bronchiectasis and NTM Care Center Network, connecting patients to specialized care and support for bronchiectasis and nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease.

University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) is one of 62 sites across the country to receive the designation from the Bronchiectasis and NTM Association.

“For our patients, the designation affirms access to a multidisciplinary team experienced in managing complex airway disease, incorporating advanced diagnostics, evidence-based therapies and participation in national research networks.” Veronica Indihar, MD Director, Bronchiectasis Clinic & Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center

"It also strengthens our ability to collaborate with other leading centers, ensuring that patients benefit from evolving standards of care and emerging treatments,” said Indihar, MD.

Once considered uncommon, bronchiectasis is now widely described as the third most common chronic inflammatory airway disease, after asthma and COPD. Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung condition in which the airways become widened and damaged, making it harder to clear mucus and increasing the risk of infections and inflammation.

UC Health has developed an integrated program dedicated to providing specialized care for people living with bronchiectasis and other complex airway diseases including CF, non-CF bronchiectasis, and primary ciliary dyskinesia. The team provides coordinated, multidisciplinary care alongside a robust clinical research infrastructure, allowing patients access to clinical trials and novel therapies.

“High-quality care is essential because untreated or suboptimally managed bronchiectasis leads to recurrent infections, progressive lung damage, and reduced quality of life. Focused expertise and coordinated care can significantly alter disease trajectory and improve patient outcomes,” said Indihar, MD.

As part of this designation, UC Health becomes part of the European Multicentre Bronchiectasis Audit and Research Collaboration Registry, the world's largest clinical dataset that researchers and clinicians can analyze over time to improve the understanding of the disease, natural history, progression and complications.
