Injectable Fillers

Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse Filler

Soft Tissue Fillers

Soft tissue fillers, most commonly hyaluronic gel such as Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane, are injected beneath the skin to fill in fine lines, facial wrinkles, creases, and sunken skin to restore a more youthful look. They can also be used to fill in skin depressions and some types of acne scarring. Injectable fillers are used to add fullness to lips and cheeks, and are commonly used in combination with other procedures such as skin resurfacing or during a facelift procedure. In addition to the gel fillers, Radiesse can also be used. Radiesse is made of calcium-based micro-spheres suspended in a natural gel that works with your own body to stimulate new collagen. Injections with hyaluronic and calcium-based fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm and Radiesse are conveniently performed in the office and usually last 3-12 months.

Private Consultation

Your surgeon will begin with an examination of the area you wish to have treated. You will discuss your goals and expectations, and the surgeon will explain what you may expect from treatment. The surgeon will evaluate your overall health to ascertain that you are a good candidate for this procedure. You should be prepared to discuss your complete medical history, including previous procedures and any medications you are taking (including vitamins). You will also discuss the cost of the procedure, keeping in mind that this is an elective procedure which is not covered by most insurance companies.

Preparation

This procedure requires no pre-testing, but you should avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, St. John’s wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements prior to treatment because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. If you are prone to facial cold sores, your surgeon may prescribe a preventive medication.

Procedure

The area to be treated will be cleansed and prepped. An anesthetic may be applied before your procedure to help relieve discomfort, but you may feel a slight stinging sensation as your surgeon begins to inject the filler to the treatment area. Several injections may be needed to achieve the desired result.

Recovery and Healing Time

Following injection, you are usually able to return to work or everyday activities immediately. You may experience mild bruising, redness or swelling, which improves within a few days. Sun exposure and cold outdoor activities should be limited until any swelling or bruising has resolved. Avoid touching the treated area within six hours following treatment. After that, the area can be gently washed. Avoid exercise and alcohol for six hours after your treatment. Having a follow-up treatment before the filler has been fully absorbed may enhance the lasting effect. Consult your surgeon about recommendations for touch-up or follow-up treatments.

Procedure Risks

  • Allergic reaction to fillers
  • Inflammation at injection site(s)
  • Redness and swelling
