Is Levothyroxine Alone Adequate Thyroid Hormone Replacement?

Posted Date: Jun 10, 2019

  • Specialties: Otolaryngology, Thyroid Cancer
  • Type of Study: Observational/Survey

This study plans to learn more about your thinking and sense of well-being before and after thyroid removal surgery. Multiple studies have found that patients taking thyroid hormone replacement have a lower quality of life compared to other people not taking thyroid hormone replacement. Previous studies have shown that the type of polymorphism (or form of gene) that a patient has may affect their thinking and well-being. No study has ever evaluated a patient’s symptoms (thinking and well-being) before and after thyroidectomy. We know from large community-based studies that symptoms of hypothyroidism continue despite what we believe is “adequate” thyroid hormone replacement in as many as 10% of patients. This study will be the first to test the same patient before and after thyroidectomy in order to compare normal thyroid function with levothyroxine medication replacement therapy (LT4). You are being asked to be in this research study because you will undergo thyroidectomy (thyroid removal) for nodular thyroid disease.
