Healthy Tongue And Swallow Ultrasound

Prior research indicates ultrasound has become an affordable and effective method for diagnosis and therapeutic intervention for individuals with speech disorders (5). Despite evidence validating the use of ultrasonography to assess swallowing function, there is no normative data for aspects of lingual ability during swallowing using ultrasound (US) (1,3). Current evaluation techniques for oropharyngeal swallowing are costly, time intensive, and require specialized resources such as radiologic suite for videofluoroscopic or laryngoscopy equipment for endoscopic evaluation. Furthermore, endoscopic evaluation or clinical swallow assessments cannot ascertain oral phases of swallow. However, there is a lack of data supporting the relationship between lingual strength and swallowing function measured by US. The aim of this study is to provide normative data to assist in diagnostic and therapeutic methods of swallowing intervention with use of ultrasound imaging. The purpose of this work it to collect measurements of tongue movement and other aspects of swallowing function in healthy adults using ultrasound imaging and potentially use these data in evaluation and treatment of oral and pharyngeal swallowing.

Criteria:

Inclusion For Healthy Adults: Ages 20 Years And Up, Currently Healthy. Exclusion: Any Prior History Of Dysphagia Or Speech Impairment, Any Structural Abnormality Of Orofacial Musculature Including Injury Or Surgical), History Of Head And Neck Cancer, Hist
