Computed Tomographic Quantification Of Periaortic Adipose Tissue Volume As A Correlate Of Cardiovascular Disease

In the current study, we look to use CT to measure perivascular adipose tissue as well as degree of CVD. A retrospective study analysis was preformed to identify subjects who had non-contrasted computed tomography scans of their chest and/or abdomen.There were 200 cases reviewed, 184 non-contrast chest CTs and 72 non-contrast abdominal CTs. When comparing thoracic PVAT volume to thoracic parameters measured in the study population as a whole, thoracic PVAT correlates with thoracic aortic dimension (0.480) but not thoracic aortic calcification (0.117). Increased thoracic and abdominal periaortic adipose tissue volumes are associated with increased aortic dimension and cardiovascular disease. Thoracic periaortic adipose tissue correlates better with traditional risk factors compared to abdominal PVAT.
