Founded in 2019, Pain Stewardship helps reduce unnecessary opioid use after surgery while ensuring pain control is effective. The team supports safer prescribing guided by national standards, helping patients receive the relief they need with a lower risk of opioid-related harm.

Pharmacists with advanced training guide pain stewardship to support safer care. The team helps our clinicians use the prescription drug monitoring program and expands access to addiction treatment resources so patients experience more effective care across our entire system.

The program strengthens patient education for people using pain medicines and supports those living with substance use disorders. It also expands naloxone availability throughout UC Health and in the community so more people have access to overdose-reversal medication when it’s needed most.
