What is Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation?
The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation providers at UC Health aim to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide variety of disorders that affect the nerves, muscles, bones and brain. These types of conditions often cause temporary or permanent impairment. They may include:
- Stroke
- Musculoskeletal therapy
- Traumatic brain injury
- Spinal cord injury
Our goal is to improve function and overall quality of life. We take a holistic approach to treatment, covering improvement in all aspects:
- Physical
- Mental
- Social
- Emotional
- Vocational
Our physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists treat you as a whole person and deliver a customized treatment plan tailored to your individual condition, medical history and lifestyle.
We see patients who do not require surgery, or who require therapy following surgery. Our focus is on intervention, pain management through medication and other minimally invasive treatment options.
Researchers on the Leading Edge of Care
Physical medicine & rehabilitation specialists at UC Health are also faculty with the UC College of Medicine. As teachers and researchers, they are up to date on the latest treatments and breakthroughs for their patients.
Our Multidisciplinary Approach
Our Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physicians are in close contact with other specialists throughout the UC Health network. We work to coordinate care between your primary care doctor and other specialists who need to get involved in order to improve your condition.
Specialty areas we may work with throughout the course of your treatment may include:
- Neurology
- Pain medicine
- Rheumatology
- Orthopedics
- Spine surgery
- Physical, occupational and speech therapy
Restoring Independence is the Goal
The main goal of treatment is to make the patient as independent as possible, whatever impairment he or she has. We continue to follow up with patients after they have left the hospital to ensure their treatment has been effective. We offer services at our outpatient clinic for patients who require ongoing care.
