The digital mammography unit at West Chester Hospital is part of our women’s imaging center, which also includes DEXA bone-density scanning, ultrasound, and stereotactic biopsy. Digital mammography is a type of imaging that uses digital signals to produce images of the breast that can be seen on a computer screen, and is used to examine a woman’s breasts for cancer or other diseases. Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancers because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them. Research has shown that annual mammograms lead to early detection of breast cancers. Current guidelines recommend screening every year for women beginning at age 40.
