Perinatal Treatment Services

As the regions only academic medical center, we deliver specialized, high-risk obstetrical care and monitoring on an outpatient basis. Our team of providers include maternal fetal medicine specialists, OB/GYN fellows and residents, certified diabetes educators, and advanced practice nurses specializing in high-risk pregnancy. We focus on compassionate care, from diagnosis to the birth of the baby to postnatal care.

Assessment, Diagnostics and Intervention

UC Medical Center is the first hospital in the state of Ohio and one of only 34 nationwide to be award the Perinatal Care Certification by the Joint Commission. The certification means that patients can expect integrated, coordinated, patient-centered care from prenatal to postnatal. Fetal care begins with a complete patient assessment by a clinical panel where each case is thoroughly evaluated and reviewed individually. Diagnoses and plans of care are delivered directly with compassion and honesty. Extended family is welcome and encouraged to attend consultations. Our extensive patient assessment includes:

  • Diagnostic testing and fetal assessment
  • Prenatal counseling and support services
  • Recommendations for you and your family
  • Fetal interventions and fetal surgery, if indicated
  • Postnatal care and long-term follow up

We treat the full spectrum of conditions with the most current diagnostic capabilities. Treatment programs include:

  • High-risk pregnancy management
  • Genetic and prenatal counseling
  • Management of fetal arrhythmias
  • Preventive therapies
  • Intrauterine transfusion
  • Fetal shunt therapy

Our fetal surgical interventions include minimally invasive fetoscopic surgery, selective fetal laser procedures, radiofrequency ablation, open fetal surgery for rare and life-threatening conditions and Ex-utero Intrapartum Treatment (EXIT) procedures.

Diabetes and Pregnancy

Achieving and maintaining peak health for a diabetic patient during the pre-pregnancy and the prenatal period is critical. Certified diabetes educators and advanced practice nurses work with patients to achieve tight blood sugar control before and during pregnancy. Patients are coached in a supportive environment and watched closely to ensure optimal care. For those who develop gestational diabetes, immediate education is provided within seven days of diagnosis to help patients gain glucose control as quickly as possible. For more information about our Diabetes and Pregnancy Program, please download our brochure.

Continuous Blood Glucose Control

The professional continuous glucose monitor (CGM) tracks blood glucose trends in patients over an extended period of time by monitoring glucose levels every five minutes throughout the day, for up to 288 readings. Use of this technology helps our clinicians respond immediately with adjustments in your treatment.

OB Ultrasound and Fetal Testing

With five dedicated ultrasound machines and a team of board-certified ultrasonographers, we provide the highest level of OB ultrasound and fetal testing. Our perinatologists provide same-day results. We are home to the only telemedicine unit in the area allowing care providers to read real-time ultrasounds conducted in other locations. For patients at one of our centers in the surrounding areas, this means immediate access to results and a plan-of-care.
